| British researchers think that downloading has devalued music appreciation.
"The accessibility of music has meant that it is
taken for granted and does not require a deep emotional commitment once
associated with music appreciation," said music psychologist Adrian
North on Tuesday. .......................... "In the 19th century, music was seen as a highly
valued treasure with fundamental and near-mystical powers of human
communication," said North.

Hmmm, I wonder if these researchers thought, possibly, that the lack of coherent agreement on what "good music" is as styles splintered and formed niche markets could have played a part in that. Or, if perhaps they considered that music isn't "appreciated as much" because it doesn't require the same level of musical talent than it did in "the 19th century."
The more "studies" about various things I see, the more cynical I become. Scientifically valid studies that could perhaps lead to meaningful conclusions get lost among the crap. Just like the occasional piece of musical artistry is, today, lost among the mass of musical crap.

| Here are some of my season ending college football thoughts after last night's game.
I think the Rose Bowl was a heck of a national championship game.
I think Texas got lucky last night a number of times. They fumbled or nearly fumbled half a dozen times and were lucky enough to get the ball back, or get a call in their favor, that allowed them to keep the ball. Further, they were given a gift TD when the ball should have been spotted at the 12 before they missed their extra point.
I think that I was rooting for Texas to lose, but at least now we don't have to hear about how USC is the greatest team of all time for the next 6 months. I dislike both teams so either team that won would have been a mixed blessing.
I think Lendale White will be a better NFL RB than Reggie Bush.
I think the ACC was the best conference top to bottom this year, while the SEC had the best "top" teams. Following those two are the Big 12, the Pac-10, Big 10, and Big East.
I still think Vince Young will not be a great NFL QB. Michael Vick is still the most electrifying QB I've ever seen in college, but he frankly sucks in the NFL. The value of a running QB (as opposed to a mobile one) is greatly reduced in the NFL, where the game speed is so much quicker.
That said, I think after last night's performance Young's draft stock will never be higher, and he'd be a fool to not leave early in the draft and take the money. Leinart hurt himself by staying an extra year, he would have been #1 overall to San Fran and this year he won't go with the first overall pick. That difference will cost him millions. With Young's playing style he's far more likely to be hurt than was Lienart and stands to lose millions in first round money. Besides, how could he have any more successful season than he's had this year, topped by last night's showcase?
I think Houston would be better served by trading down to a 5th - 6th 1st round pick and getting an extra 2nd round pick, and using their picks to bolster their sad OLine. Lots of good linemen coming out this year, and with Dominick Davis on the squad already, it's clear where their need is. It's no coincidence that the two teams playing for the NC last night had two of the best OLines in the game this year.
I also think Houston won't do that, and will take Bush with the first pick. It will be a mistake.
That is all for now

| In other news, good old Baptist hypocrisy shines through again! Saw this story and it made me laugh.
A Tulsa pastor was arrested late Tuesday for allegedly soliciting an Oklahoma City police officer posing as a male prostitute, authorities said. Lonnie Latham, 60, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was arrested at 9:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, 2200 West I-44 Service Road. He later was booked into Oklahoma County Jail.
Latham is a member of the Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee. | | |
